God would like
for us to be acquainted with how He dealt with people in the Old Testament
(Romans 15:4). That information will support our hope for our own future.
The Apostle Paul says the things written in the Old Testament are an example
for us (1 Corinthians 10:6) and they were written for our admonition (1
Corinthians 10:11). In the Old Testament God had a special covenant with the
Israelites. It is recorded by Moses in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and
Deuteronomy. The rest is history, writings, and prophecy.
In the Old
Testament God prophesied that He would make a New Covenant with people
(Jeremiah 31:31-34). The writer of Hebrews in the New Testament says that
Prophecy is fulfilled by the New Covenant we have with God in the New
Testament (Hebrews 8:8-12). God now speaks to us by His Son (Hebrews 1:1,2).
The Apostle
Paul encourages us to properly handle this word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
By it we can be approved by God.
God wants us
to have a general knowledge of the Old Testament, and an even better
knowledge of the New Testament. He wants us to know how He dealt with people
in the past, and to know what He expects of us today. It will take time to
accomplish both. By allotting some time to the reading of the Bible, by
talking with others who have studied it, and by listening to sermons and
lessons by those who have made an in-depth study of the Bible, we can come
to know the things God teaches in His word that prepares us to please God.
It will complete our preparation to meet God (2 Timothy 3:16,17).
