“Having
therefore these promises beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all
defilement of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
(2 Corinthians 7:1) Refer to 2 Corinthians 6:16-18 to know those promises.
To keep our lives clean and holy is the purpose of those promises.
Paul says he is
persuaded God will guard what he has committed to Him. (2 Timothy 1:12)
Jesus says he
will be with us to the end of the world if we will teach all He has
committed to us. (Matthew 28:20)
Peter told
his audience if they would repent and be baptized they would receive the
forgiveness of their sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). See
also Acts 5:32 where God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him.
We are told
how God will raise us in the resurrection. (1 Corinthians 15:35-57) What a
blessed promise!
We are told
that godliness is profitable in this life and the life to come. (1 Timothy
4:8) The more god-likeness we have in our lives the more assurance we have
that we will enjoy all of God’s promises here and hereafter.
“God grants
us His precious and exceeding great promises, that through these we may
become partakers of the divine nature.” (2 Peter 1:4)
The effect
the promises of God have on us is to help us live godly, righteous lives.
In our next
message, we will look at the new heaven and the new earth God has promised
us.
